Compare
Day One is where journal entries live. Amanu is how the moments get there.
Day One is the gold standard for sitting down to write. Amanu is for the in-between hours, when you're walking, driving, queuing, and the thought won't survive the trip home.
Who Day One is for
Reflective writers. People with a daily writing habit. Anyone who wants a beautiful, encrypted, photo-rich record of their life, with prompts, On This Day, and a properly considered reading experience.
If you already open Day One every evening, don't stop.
Who Amanu is for
People whose best thoughts happen when their hands are full. Day One asks you to sit, type, and reflect. Amanu asks you to talk, in the moment, and lets the reflection emerge from the captures.
Amanu's captures also become reminders, events, and follow-ups. A Day One entry sits beautifully on a shelf. An Amanu capture goes to work.
How they compare, side by side
| What you need | Amanu | Day One |
|---|---|---|
| Primary input | Voice | Typing |
| When you use it | Throughout the day, in moments | Sit-down session, usually evening |
| Routes into iOS apps | Yes (Reminders, Calendar) | No — entries stay in Day One |
| Photo-rich entries | Limited | Excellent |
| End-to-end encryption | In transit + at rest with disclosed vendor boundaries | Mature E2EE, years of hardening |
| Print book export | No | Yes |
Where Amanu wins
You don't need to remember to journal. You're already capturing throughout the day. The timeline writes itself.
Voice-first, with talk-back as a real conversation, not a memo.
Captures route into the rest of iOS. Day One stays inside Day One.
Where Day One wins
It is, plainly, the most beautiful journal app on iOS. The writing experience, the photo handling, the typography, the export, the print book service. Nothing else is close, and Amanu isn't trying to be.
End-to-end encryption is mature and proven. Amanu is encrypted in transit and at rest, with documented vendor boundaries, but Day One has had years to harden.
The honest call
Use both. Capture with Amanu through the day. Sit with Day One in the evening if you want to write. They don't compete, they complement.
Common questions
Can Amanu replace Day One?
It's not trying to. Day One is the gold standard for sit-down journaling. Amanu is for the in-between hours when typing isn't possible. Most users keep both.
Will my Amanu captures appear in Day One?
Not directly. Amanu writes captures to its own private timeline, and routes reminders to Apple Reminders and events to Apple Calendar. If you want a Day One entry, you can copy from Amanu manually.
Day One has prompts. Does Amanu?
No. Amanu is unstructured by design — you talk, it sorts what you said. If you want a daily prompt practice, Day One or Stoic are better.
